There are numerous benefits from having alpha brain waves. Your brain operates at different levels of arousal depending on what you are doing. When you are going about your normal daily business it is working at a frequency called beta waves. Alpha waves are slower and the state is less aroused. Being able to control your brain activity a little more and having more alpha waves can be useful.
The brain enters the alpha state when falling asleep and waking up, it is a sort of in between state. As we do different activities the brain activity therefore has to change suggesting that there are qualities inherent in each for different tasks. It is important that the brain retains this ability to switch or research has shown that disorders can arise. It is possible to deliberately induce these states. For example, to cause more alpha brain waves it is necessary to be relaxed. This can be done through meditation, controlled breathing and listening to certain kinds of music.
There are some useful reasons to do this such as aiding memory and creativity. Scientists have found that creative people have more alpha waves and when they are presented with a problem they have high bursts of them. This means when you have a problem the best thing to do could be to relax and try to induce this state. It is thought that this may happen because it is easier to access the subconscious and imaginative parts of the brain.
Experiments have also demonstrated improvements in learning ability and memory. Many learning tools such as language courses are sold with a tape of classical music. This is because the music induces alpha waves and the memory should be able to perform better as the person is practicing the new words. It may be that in this state the brain is more focused on less tasks and therefore better at them.
We are all familiar with the concept of relaxing to be able to carry out a new skill. For example, when learning new moves gymnasts try to be relaxed so that their thoughts are clearer. People who are at the top of their professions often emit bursts of alpha waves before carrying out their skilled task.
If you have problems sleeping then inducing alpha waves can help you. The alpha state is the one below waking, alert state and above deep sleep so entering it means your brain has started slowing down and is heading in the direction of deep sleep.
Many people suffer from stress and the problems related to it. One of the reasons people are stressed is because they do not relax enough. Learning how to induce the alpha state can help stressed people by calming their minds and giving a feeling of well being.
There are a number of significant benefits to inducing alpha waves for people who want to create, learn and sleep well.
